Ama Wokoma – self portrait

12 x 16 Acrylic on canvas

Ama-Ibi Wokoma (meaning: the pride of the people) is the third and last child to Inye and Kristi Wokoma, who are both cultural pillars of the Seattle community. A special source of light, Ama always has the most illuminating smile on her face and dreadlocks that seem to run forever. She comes from a generation of Nigerians (paternal roots) and equally strong African Americans (maternal roots). The slabs of bright mixed color used to depict her face are a gesture of hope for a life that is as interesting complex as it’s filled with graceful dichotomies.
